HIBm ILIIIFE Support GHS at Weiner King Volume LVII Namber Grimsley High School, Greenshoro, N.C. 27408 October 31, 1977 Homecoming Blends Tradition And Nostalgia The biggest Grimsley social event of the fall was held last Friday October 21, as the Grim sley Whirlies beat the Smith Eagles 17-9. Tammy Murrelle is our 1977-78 Homecoming Queen. Tammy was chosen Queen out of 14 other senior girls, with Denise Dunn and Leigh Anne Blowe as Maids of Honor. Martha Alspaugh, escorted by Tom Clark; Rita Barrett, escorted by Cornelius Clark; Leigh Anne Blowe, escorted by Tommy Few; Cheryl Buffington, escorted by Dick Gilbert; Broughton Clapp, escorted by Brent Priddy; Jenny Duncan, escorted by Gary Bald win; Denise Dunn, escorted by Amp Long; Patti Gray, escorted by Danny Vaughn; Renee High, escorted by Wes Neal; Terry McCormack, escorted by Peter Gratale; April McNeil, escorted by Eric Summers; Tammy Mur relle, escorted by Jeff Darnell; SSBAG PLANS YEAR The student School Board Act ion Group (SSBAG) held their first meeting on Monday, October 3, at the School Administration Building, with Mr. Betts presi ding. Persons attending this were the members of the Greensboro Board of Education, Student School Board Action Group mem- bers, and the Director of Student and Community Programs. The meeting began with the introduction, of all the Board members. Next, speakers Otis Hairston, Lacy Baynes, Charles Clotzberger, Walter Johnson, and Joanne Bluethenthal gave brief discussions on the history of the School Board Group, what it has done in the past, and the plans that have been made for this school year. The members of the School Board hope that this year will be a successful one, and that students will approach the Board with any suggestions, opinions, or prob lems that they feel should be brought out. It was decided that the meet ings to be held this year will be at varied places, and on different days. Members of the School Board will be visiting the four high schools during some of their meetings. The schedule for SSBAG meet ings this year is as follows: Monday, November 7, 10:00 at the administration building; Tuesday, Dec. 6, 10:30 at Smith High School; Thurs.,Jan. 5, 10:30 at Dudley High 5>chool, Friday, Feb. 3, at Page High School, Tuesday, March 7. 10:30 at Grims ley High School Thuts., April 6, 11:00 a* e administration build ing. At the Beach AP Biolc^ Experiments The Advanced PlacementBiolo- gy classes, under the direction of Mrs. Betty Brown,took an over night trip to Kure Beach on October 1st and 2nd in order to study the environment of the open beach. The first activity planned for the day after the six-hour bus ride was a visit to the marine biology center at Kure Beach. The stu dents toured the center viewing the various marine exhibits. These include displays relating to plant life, animal life and the physical aspects of the open beach. Later, a classroom lesson was held at the center in which the students were supposed to identify forty different specimens from the beach. Next on the agenda was a visit to the rock jetty. With the tide coming in, students jumped care fully from rock to rock so that they could observe and examine life forms. Such things as sea urchins and starfish were found between the rocks. The following morning, the class arrived at the beach behind the biology center. They divided into groups to study and investi gate various aspects of the open beach. The salinity group checked for salt content in the water. Students in the topography group ‘ measured the incline and decline of the sand dunes. The water table group dug deep holes in the beach to reach water. The animal and plant group round and identi fied many species from the beach and water. Each group presented their Endings in a classroom discussion later that afternoon. The girls were chosen accord ing to the amount of school related activities they participat ed in and a secondary factor was beauty. Activities included athle tics, to cheerleading, clubs, stu dent government and other worthwhile student projects. Another facet of the out side activities is involvement in organizations such as Young Life, GYC, and YRC Clubs are also a major part of the after school schedules of many of the mem bers of the court. Nostalgia was the theme de picted in this year’s pageant. further backed up the idea of Nostalgia. It was a street scene of downtown Greensboro in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. Grimsley was lucky enough to obtain the use of this unusual piece of scenery from the Carolina Theat er. The traditional dance following the game was held on the Grimsley campus in the cafeteria from 10:00 until 12:00 that night. It was well attended with over 60 tickets sold before the date of the dance. Seniors Seek ^holarships ™ ~ ' scholarship and service. All nominees are rated on a point system with the male and female with the highest point total from the 7 judges being the monthly winners. Nominees receive recognitioh from the Greensboro City Council through a formal presentation at a- City Council meeting, a certificate of recognition, a writeup in The Greensboro Record, a $100 scholarship from McDonald’s and a chance to compete for the Youth of the Year Award and scholarship in August, 1978. To secure a nomination form, see a high school guidance counselor or call 373-2173 any weekday afternoon. Any deser ving senior youth may be nominated by a school, group, religious body or individual. The city of Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department is now taking nominations for its 1977-78 Youth of the Month Program. This program seeks to honor 12 males and 12 females of outstanding abilities. All nominees must be members of city high school senior classes or must be residents of the City of Greensboro who are members of a senior class somewhere. Nominations are taken from September 1, 1977 through March 1, 1978 although it is wise to enter the nomination as early as possible in the competition year. A board of adult judges will meet once a month to select the male and female students of outstanding abilities in leader ship, organization participation. NIEMS BCIIICfS STUDENT AFFAIRS REPORT • Tom Tarduogno and Harlan Frye have an excellent job so far. Student Affairs meets Tuesdays at 3:30. They have already planned the Flea Market sales, and Thanksgiving collections. If you have time or materials to contribute to a project, please get in touch with Tom, Harlan, or Beth Imbus. Attendance at meet ings is excellent. PEP BOARD As in past years, pep board, now led by Tammy Murrelle and Alicia Neese, is the well-suppor ted haven for spirit. Whether you’re involved or not, show spirit! A button, sticker, or pin on a spirit ribbon. Don’t let spirit Idie!
